What God Told You to Do Matters More

Have you ever been in conversation with someone where you shared what God was asking you to do? Once you finished sharing, they looked at you with unbelief. Like they couldn't understand why God would ask you to do that?

This happened to me recently. I was talking with a friend a few weeks ago and shared what God had told my family to do. She looked at me like it was the most outlandish thing for God to say. I know in her heart she didn’t mean anything by it.

But in that moment, the enemy started to work and plant little seeds of doubt in my mind. I started to question if I really heard God right. Did he really tell me what I thought he was telling me? I wasn't so sure anymore.

So I went to God in prayer and asked him to bring clarity to this situation. To show me that I heard him correctly. 

My prayer was answered as I read 1 Kings 13. In this chapter, God gives a man of the Lord a word to share with King Jeroboam. After he shares the Word from the Lord and a few other things happen, which you should definitely read, the king asks the man to eat and drink with him. The man of the Lord basically tells the king that God told him not to eat bread, drink water, or go back the way he came. 

The man of the Lord left, and later a prophet saw him under a tree and told him to go with him to eat. The man of the Lord told him what the Lord had told him about not eating or drinking or returning the way that he came. 

The prophet tells the man that an angel said to him by way of the Lord to take him back to his house to eat and drink. This prophet was lying to the man. No angel appeared to him and told him these things. 

The man of the Lord trusted the prophet, believed what he said, and ultimately died because of it. It sounds harsh, but I think God is showing us how important His word is and how important it is to obey what He says. 

This was just the clarity I needed. I know what God told me to do. I know it doesn't make sense to some people, but I am learning that the words that God speaks to us matter more than any words that others can say to us. That includes the looks they give us. God's Word trumps all.

What God tells us in His word is true, and we shouldn't go against it. God also speaks to his people through the Holy Spirit. When God tells us to do something despite what someone else says, we should ALWAYS do it. What God tells us will never contradict the Bible. 

God may be telling you to do something that seems crazy to those around you. They may try to talk you out of it, but stand firm because they don't have the whole story as God does. God knows the plans he has for you; others don't. 

Now I do want to say that I believe that God can speak to us through someone else. He does want us to listen to wisdom and discernment from others; that is why He gives us community. But what others say should never replace what God told us.

This may also remind you of Adam and Eve. The enemy started to cause doubt in Eve's mind about what God truly said. Instead of listening to God and what He told her, she was influenced and stopped trusting Him. Because of her lack of trust, she would end up dying. 

I want to encourage you to trust God and what He has told you to do. He won't steer you wrong. He knows exactly where you are going. It might seem like a wild thing to do, but God has a reason for you going on that crazy journey.
